Hi Everyone, the 3rd Terra Craft fair you’ve been waiting for is finally here.

THE FAIR:
The third craft fair is put together by Terra Kulture and her craft suppliers to promote Artistic creativity and the value of African Arts and Crafts by Nigerians to the rest of the world. The fair will feature over 15 creative Artists, exhibiting craft works such as jewelleries,textile wood works, sculptural pieces, printing, fashion accessories and lots more.
It’s a three days event (starting from 8th-10th of December) that promises to have a large audience from reputable organisations, Youth as well as the general public.
Terra Kulture and her Crafts suppliers have come together to celebrate Nigerian and indeed African Culture and Heritage through exclusive creative Craftmanship.

The event is intended to be annual one and to promote a positive image of Art and Craft in Nigeria . This is the third year of the fair and it is intended to reach out to all and sundry and Terra Kulture will continue to identify and promote Art And Crafts.

This November, at Terrakulture, we have an exhibition of paintings by a renowned artist : Chike Onuorah, a.k.a.  d’artist.

Are you a culture enthusiast? Then the place to be on Saturday, the 29^th of October, 2011 is The Yoruba Drum Festival at Terra Kulture.

Yoruba Drum Festival is an initiative of cultural diplomat, Ayodele Ganiu. It was created as a bridge for the gap in social and economic relations between Nigeria and Germany as a result of cultural differences. Although the focus of the event is on the essence of drums in Yoruba land, other aspects of the Yoruba culture such as language, dance and music will be explored.

This event, organized by Intro Afrika and Germany based Egbe Omo Oduduwa Berlin e.V will feature presentations on Yoruba Drums; A Language Technology by Dr Tunde Adegbola, Executive Director, African Languages Technology Initiative; Yoruba Drum Festival: A Youth-led initiative on cultural diplomacy and tourism development for South West Nigeria” by Bayurat Ibitola Fashina-Jinadu, Centre for Black Diaspora, DePaul University, Chicago-Illinois, USA.

Get ready to be entertained by performances from The Talking Drums Orchestra, Ayanbinrin,and Yoruba acrobatic dancers, Kaaro Oojire Cultural Troupe!

Well, since we are new on the blogosphere, we have decided to share some of our past events with you. We start off with Phases-A Campaign of Creative Vigour.  Phases was a painting and photography exhibition featuring works from students of the visual unit of the Creative Arts department of the University of Lagos. Works ranging from oil colour to mixed media, pasted, carving and metal photography were on display. Though the works were from postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate scholars of the university, they were devoid of the obscurity usually associated with works from the academia.  You can view pictures here.

Next was the Tents Gallery Art Collection 2011 which opened on the 24^th of September.  The exhibition was put together by Tents Gallery in collaboration with Terra Kulture to showcase over ten years of paintings and sculptures exploring diverse themes and cultures. Works exhibited included those of Ade Odunfa, Sam Ajobiewe, Ogaga Tuodeinye amongst others. The works, selected not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for the value they possess, reflected influences from different generations and different art schools. All these put together made the collection a unique one.

Not only that, the kids learnt cultural dances and how to play the local drums. Many also learnt to converse in Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. Asides learning to communicate in the Nigerian languages, the children learnt important cultural norms like curtseying (prostrating or kneeling) while greeting elders.

In all, the kids had a rewarding and memorable experience as these pictures show.

Put together by the Cameroonian arts enthusiast, Catherine Pittet, The Last Pictures Show seeks to give recognition to upcoming African artists. Now in its eighth year and with exhibitions in Lagos, Douala and Paris, the exhibition bears proof to the endless new potential of the African cultural heritage. Exhibitors include Aissatou Kadry, Alex Nwokolo, Jean Emati, Joshua Nmesirinonye and many others.

Exhibition opens on Thursday, 20th of October, 2011 by 6pm at Terra Kulture, 1376, Tiamiyu Savage, Victoria Island, Lagos.

A scene from a stage play in Terra Kulture

The weekend is here again and as usual the stage at Terra Kulture will be alive this Sunday as The Crowne Troupe of Africa performs exciting routines!

But first let’s give you a brief history of theatre in Nigeria. Nigerian theatre has its origins among the Yorubas of South Western Nigeria in the early 1940s. As expected, the early plays were performed entirely in Yoruba and combined mime, music, drumming and folklore to produce truly remarkable plays. In those days, professional troupes such as those of Hubert Ogunde, Kola Ogunmola and Duro Ladipo travelled from place to place performing their plays. Although some of these playwrights such as Kola Ogunmola exhibited Western influences in their plays, they leaned heavily on Yoruba oral tradition. Hence, they made generous use of praise poetry, songs, proverbs, and incantations. So theatre became not only an avenue for entertainment but also a tool for educating the younger generation.

Sadly, today, the culture of theatre is almost nonexistent. Many people, especially the younger generation, would rather watch movies and play video games than watch stage plays. The reasons for this are not farfetched. First, a lot of young people are not exposed to theatre in their early years. Another reason and by far the most important, is the lack of theatre facilities in Nigeria and Lagos in particular.

To reverse this trend, Theatre@Terra was initiated in 2005. So far, over 200 plays have been staged and the responses gotten confirmed the longing of many to see the culture of theatre thrive again. So in the same spirit of promoting Nigerian theatre, we will be hosting The Crown Troupe of Africa every Sunday this October. Get ready for an evening of entertainment as they thrill audiences with dance, drama, comedy and much more! There would also be performances from Footprints of David Art Academy (A children’s dance -theatre company and arts academy). It promises to be a worthwhile experience!
